Half Day Snorkel Trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley

Half Day Snorkel Trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan means little channel in Mayan and is a natural break on the barrier reef where ocean depth ranges from three to thirty feet. Here we will enjoy seeing the breathtaking myriad of marine life and huge coral garden, among which are flourishing stag horn corals and sea fans. Shark Ray Alley is a shallow water snorkel where we will enjoy swimming with the harmless nurse sharks and southern stingrays. This sanctuary was officially established in 1987 and since then the return of all species of fish has been quite dramatic. Due to its protected status, what was once a depleted fishing area has now been allowed to re-generate, producing a quite colorful fish spectacle.

Cave Tubing and Belize Zoo by Boat

Cave Tubing and Belize Zoo by Boat

The day begins as we make our way to the mainland and up the Old Belize River. While passing through, we will encounter numerous amounts of wildlife including crocodiles, manatees, iguanas, and monkeys while having a continental breakfast. After cruising through the river, we will then board a van that will take us to the spectacular Belize Zoo. Home to an impressive array of large cats, primates, reptiles, and birds, this habitat gives us the opportunity of viewing the prolific wildlife of Belize in one location. Then we will head to Jaguar Paw Resort where lunch will be served. After lunch our guide will gear us up with all appropriate equipment including headlights and tubes for the caves. We will start our first forty-five minute jungle trail to the Caves Branch River and its winding path through the Mayan mountains and numerous ancient caves once inhabited by the Mayan people. We will be transported back in time as we float down this river! Our guide will point out various plants, roots, and herbs once used by the ancient civilization.

Bacab Eco Park on Horseback

This jungle adventure is an hour of excitement as we discover the Belizean tropical forest from on the top of our horses. In the high canopy of intertwining branches, we will see Black Howler Monkeys, iguanas lazily sunning themselves or even native species of colorful, tropical birds. Flora and fauna of all different colors surround us as we make our way through the hanging vines and palm trees. The trail continues to wind through the Royal Palms as nesting parrots call out in the forest and streaks of sunlight illuminate through the canopy light our way.

Lamanai Ruins by Boat

Lamanai Ruins by Boat

This is the Highway to Tower Hill. Here, we will once again board another boat that will take us down the winding New River Lagoon for forty-five minutes where Belizean wildlife at its best comes alive. We will encounter the many species of birds, monkeys, crocodiles, interesting plant life, and culture as we pass the Amish and Mestizo communities along the way. Once at Lamanai, lunch is served along with sodas, beers, and rum punch. Lamanai, also translated to submerged crocodile, is dated a pre-classic structure in the Mundo Maya. This is the only Maya site in Belize that has its own private museum, where all the artifacts found by the archaeologist, Pendergast and his team, are kept. Our experienced tour guide also provides a detailed and informative briefing on all of the artifacts. The tour covers approximately five to eight of the Lamanai Maya Temples. While touring this site, huge masks depicting dead rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest amid the chatter of bird life and the haunting call of the Howler monkeys. Our guide will point out the Copal and Raman trees, which were of great importance in ancient times. After a completely once in a lifetime experience, a leisurely journey back will retire our day.
